Philippines: am I home?

Just kidding about the title. Well, kinda. Long and the short: I love the Philippines. Here’s a brief taste so far:

Phil collage

So Rob, what did you do in the Philippines? “I ate.” This beautiful creation below is called halo-halo. Laci, I’m sorry to break this to you, but this stuff makes tufahija taste like dirt. It’s a combination of baby coconut ice cream, and a million other things that I don’t even know. It is, in short, heaven in your mouth:halo halo

Responses

  1. Feel free to smuggle some of that heaven back with you…

  2. Is Rob getting fat? Maybe you should not let him eat too much of the baby coconut heaven :)

Can’t wait to see more pictures and hear more stories.

  3. Makes tufahija taste like dirt….hmmmm. Could you put some of that stuff in your suitcase and bring it back, so we can taste it?

    Have a great time, guys!

  4. your sins are forgiven Rob. It looks waay better then Tufahija, so I guess you are right…

    L

  5. So I’m feeling a little left out. What’s tufahija?
    The halo-halo sure looks yummy.

  6. that looks like that korean ice dish. we have the ice making thing at home. it’s manual so we have to turn the knob at the top. it’s in shape of jerry from tom and jerry cartoons and his eyes move side to side when you’re making ice.

way too much info about nothing. still praying for you all.

  7. Hey! Tom Fisher here. Bolivia is not known for its food (except this shockingly good hot drink called api, and the cow heart, which I have yet to try), so that dessert looks quite nice!

  8. mary, sorry for the confusion on this very important topic. tufahija is a local bosnian dessert consisting of a stuffed, baked apple filled with creamy walnutty stuff. It’s good, i can’t lie. But it’s no halo-halo.

  9. Rob a serious question:
With all those yellow people around, how do you know which one is your wife…?

Lazo joking from a safe distance

  10. I AM SORRY IF I HURT ANYONE… I keep forgetting that there are cultural differences, and I tend to hurt people with my jokes…
Yellow is in our (hungarian) language a general term. NOT A DEROGATORY term. We group people by the color… white, black, yellow, red,…

after posting I realized, it might be offensive. I am sorry again…

    Lazo von unintentional jerk

  11. lazo, your unintentional sins are forgiven. see current post :)

  12. myung, so koreans know the secret too huh? Side note, there are so many koreans vacationing here! I’ve met so many of them and they laugh so hard when i tell them all of my really important korean phrases…you know, pe go pa and such? It’s nice talking with them. A little taste of home.

  13. HALO HALO!!!!!!!!!!!

we have all the fixins for it in our cupboard, but haven’t found a proper ice shaver. very important.

i’m drooling right now. just so you know.

  14. we’ll invite ourselves over when we come to town. you’re still in dallas ha? (like the filipino “ha”?)

  15. oo-oo (yes)

but not for long! i talked to your mom at church yesterday though, and she said that janet is from glendale! i have family there. we’re actually moving to pasadena late summer. maybe you can come visit and we’ll have someone else shave the ice for us :)

  16. can you mail me some of that dessert please?

    i’m waiting…

gosh i wish i could’ve come. stupid job.

  17. hi nday janet and toto rob,

  18. I have had halo-halo before!!! Like 11 years ago!!! It was super yummy! I also had something called buko-halo and a raw fish and veggies salad that was vinergary and yummy!! But it made me so sick on our overnight boat trip!
